ELFE BORDER
FIREPLACE
In the mid 1700's
Charles Towne, South Carolina was considered by many to be the cultural
and social center of the English colonies. Lavish mansions sprang up all
over town and gave steady work to the artisans who crafted the latest
fashions for these great homes. Today, only a few of the works of Thomas
Elfe, a master cabinet-maker from colonial Charleston, still exist. Like
his English counterpart, Thomas Chippendale, Elfe's furniture is treasured
and revered.
Elfe's craftsmanship may be identified by his signature
"diamond and figure eight" frets which adorn his furniture. His hand-carved
pattern has been pain-stakingly recreated in clay in one of our 40 glazes.
